Stanley Houghton
Born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater ManchesterBorn on 22nd of February 1881
Died on 10th of December 1913
Houghton was born into relatively prosperous circumstances, and received his education at Manchester Grammar School before entering his father’s cotton trading business. His great love was drama, leading him to become an unpaid newspaper theatre critic, participate in amateur dramatics as an actor and playwright, and eventually become a full-time dramatist. His most famous play is Hindle Wakes, which controversially at the time centred on sex out of wedlock, with an independent heroine rejecting marriage to her lover.
