BOOK UPOTTERY HOTELS

Frederick Jane
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Upottery, Devon
Born in 1870
Died in 1916

A fascination with warships sketched during his teenage years in Portsmouth, and with war-gaming, led to Jane’s publication of All the World’s Warships in 1898, intended originally to provide information for fellow war-gamers. That book is of course better known now as Jane’s Fighting Ships, the series still continued today. He also published novels, and was an energetic early supporter of the Scout Movement.
