John Latham
Born in Eltham, LondonBorn on 27th of June 1740
Died on 4th of February 1837
Like so many sons of physicians Latham became a doctor himself, practicing in Dartford. His fame, however, comes not from his medical practice but his ornithological studies. He became an expert on Australian birds through studying specimens brought to England; was a founder of the Linnean Society; an FRS; and published several volumes on birds and bird life – for his 11 volume A General History of Birds he etched and coloured all the illustrations himself.
