Thomas Lawrence
Born in Bristol, BristolBorn on 13rd of April 1769
Died on 7th of January 1830
Lawrence, the son of a Bristol innkeeper, rose to become the most admired English portrait painter of his age, and achieved great commercial success (success that began young – he had a gallery in fashionable Bath when just 12). In spite of his high earnings he was continually troubled financially, the victim of a generous nature and grasping family, and an obsession with collecting Old Masters. He enjoyed royal patronage, became president of the Royal Academy, and was honoured with burial in St Paul’s Cathedral.
