Matthew Locke
Born in Exeter, DevonBorn in 1621
Died in 1677
Locke’s early musical training came at Exeter Cathedral before travels in the Netherlands and a move to London. He is best known for collaborating in various operas with Sir William Davenant, and for incidental music for the theatre. He enjoyed royal appointments as a composer and organist at Charles II’s court. It is suggested he was an early influence on Henry Purcell, who succeeded him in one of his royal offices.
