Halford MacKinder

MacKinder was a pioneer in making geography an academic subject, the first Reader in the subject at Oxford. His academic career then saw him as the first principal of what became Reading University, and one of the founders of the LSE. He is seen as one of the great early figures in the field of geopolitics and geostrategy for his Heartland Theory, and his talents and ideas led to many senior appointments such as Chairman of the Imperial Shipping Committee and British High Commissioner for South Russia, and for 12 years he served as an MP.
