The son of an oil executive father and a mother with roots in the Irish aristocracy, Patrick Mayhew (Patrick Barnabus Burke Mayhew) served in the Dragoons before his studies at Balliol College Oxford, where he was President of the Union. He qualified as a barrister before becoming MP for Tunbridge Wells. Served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and Attorney General. Created Baron Mayhew of Twysden in 1997.
