- Favourite Briton.

Chris Patten, Baron Patten of Barnes, has one of the fullest CVs in recent British political history, never, however, holding one of the great offices of state – a prize denied him in the 1992 election when he lost his seat as MP for Bath (John Major intended making him Chancellor of the Exchequer). His other roles have included Chairmanship of the Conservative Party, Governor of Hong Kong, (managing the handover to China); European Commissioner; Chairman of the BBC Trust, and Chancellor of Oxford University.
