Harry Pollitt
Born in Droylesden, LancashireBorn on 22nd of November 1890
Died on 27th of June 1960
Harry Pollitt was a working class activist born into a freethinking socialist family, entering political life at an early age while working as a boilermaker. He drifted leftwards from socialism to communism, joining what became the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1920, serving as its general secretary from 1929 to 1956 when ill-health forced him to step aside and fill the chairman’s role for the four years until his death. Pollitt will be remembered as a loyal, surely over-loyal, friend of the USSR, defending Stalin’s show trials and brutality come what may, even blaming Khrushchev for leaking the truth about that period rather than condemning Stalin’s actions.
