William Prout

Prout took his MD at Edinburgh University, and practiced medicine in London. While following that profession, however, he did wide-ranging chemical research, with groundbreaking results. He discovered that the stomach contains hydrochloric acid; invented the term ‘convection’ to describe that form of heat transfer; set out a logical classification of foods into major groups; but is most famous for his 1815 ‘Hypothesis’ which provided insights into atomic structure that inspired later scientists.
