Educated at Christ Church, Oxford. Served in Royal Navy before becoming a librarian, lecturer and then editor of BBC’s First Reading (1953-54). Was ITN newscaster, host of This Week and contributor to BBC’s Panorama. Devoted himself to supporting those who were wrongly convicted or falsely accused. Knighted in 1994.
