The baritone Charles Santley was one of the greatest British music stars of the Victorian era, after training in Milan making his name initially in oratorio, then in opera, before focussing on concert performances. Among his career highlights was singing in the first Wagner opera produced in England, though his bravura style was more at home in his usual Italian opera roles. Santley toured the English-speaking world, adding to his fame. He was knighted in 1907.
