A child prodigy able to read Greek at the age of 10, Archibald Sayce studied classics at The Queen’s College Oxford, took holy orders, and became a fellow of his college. In 1891 he became Professor of Assyriology (the study of Mesopotamia’s history and languages) at Oxford. Sayce published many scholarly works in that field, especially its linguistic side, and on biblical criticism.
