BOOK HACKNEY HOTELS

Robert South
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Hackney, London
Born on 4th of September 1634
Died on 8th of July 1716

South, the son of a merchant, was educated at Westminster and Christ Church, Oxford, becoming public orator of that university from 1660 to 1677. As a preacher he was famed for his mocking humour, directed primarily against Puritans though as so often with the religious he found other targets to attack within his church. He enjoyed several mid-level clerical appointments, and their dues, but chance and his reputation prevented him becoming a bishop (though he was once supposedly offered an Irish archbishopric).
