Charles Spurgeon

Baptist minister Charles Spurgeon gained the nickname Prince of Preachers for his oratory at New Park Street Chapel in Southwark and then for decades at the purpose-build Metropolitan Tabernacle in the same district. He wrote many volumes of sermons and of rather homespun wisdom, was a fervent speaker and writer against slavery (to his personal cost – Southern Baptists in the USA ceased buying his writings because of this), and a practical help to poor children, founding Stockwell’s Orphanage and the charity now called Spurgeon’s.
