Duncan Bannatyne, born in Clydebank in 1949, is a genuine entrepreneur who has made a significant fortune by spotting opportunities in several fields and making money in them with sound business practice – and great energy.
His family had little money, and like so many before him the Navy offered a way to begin a career and to see the world. What he saw at the premature end of that career was the inside of military prison, having it seems engineered a dishonourable discharge to escape a life that no longer appealed to him.
After a spell on Jersey doing a variety of jobs he moved to Teesside . Nearly 30, his business career proper began there with a single ice-cream truck, rapidly expanded to a fleet which was sold to finance a move into the care home business where along with diversification into nurseries he made his first millions. Both chains were sold in 1996.
Bannatyne later moved into health clubs, spas and hotels, building his estimated wealth to well beyond the £300 million mark. He achieved fame through the Dragon’s Den series on the BBC, where since the first series he has given short shrift to the zanier ideas which come up. He has used his fame, and a great deal of his own money, to promote the work of various charities. His genuine commitment to this work, especially with sick and abandoned children in Romania, is to his eternal credit.
