BOOK HESWALL HOTELS

John Peel
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Heswall, Merseyside
Born on 30th of August 1939
Died on 25th of October 2004

John Peel worked in the USA from 1960 to 1967, his love of music and Liverpudlian roots (rather posh ones, nurtured at Shrewsbury School) seeing him begin there his lifelong career in radio. After a brief period on pirate station Radio London he was employed by the BBC for the new Radio 1, where he broadcast regularly until his death in 1964. Peel championed music he liked, from prog rock to punk via folk, rap, blues and world music, his shows worth listening to because for every five songs you hated there was one new gem you loved. Revelations about his personal life, with allegations of sex with under-age girls, have somewhat sullied his reputation since his death.

If you have men who will only come if they know there is a good road, I don't want them. I want men who will come if there is no road at all. - David Livingstone
