In his youth Matt Smith looked destined to be a professional footballer, or at least had a shot as it were, until a back problem ended those hopes. A perceptive teacher pushed him into acting, and Smith has had a rapid rise since then. He acted with the National Youth Theatre, and studied drama and creative writing at UEA, his professional success beginning while a student there. Smith has plenty of stage credits to his name, but is best-known as the 11th Doctor Who, surprising many fans who feared his youth was against him by becoming arguably the best incarnation since the show’s return. He now seems set for equal success in the movies.
