Made London debut as actor in 1930. Worked as designer, scene-painter, carpenter, character actor and in music hall, including London Palladium. Founded Mermaid Theatre (1951) in grounds of his home in St John’s Wood to rid theatre of snobbery. Rebuilt in 1953 in City of London and then permanently using public subscriptions at Puddle Dock, Blackfriars in 1959.
