Born 1658. Died 1719 - Scottish financier, founder of Bank of England.

Spent early years trading in the West Indies, making his fortune. Founded the Bank of England in 1694, became a director but resigned in 1695. Led an unsuccessful scheme to promote a new colony at Darien in Panama. Played role in establishing the Union of the Parliaments of Scotland and England in 1707.
