Born 1818 - Chunar, India. Died 1898 - Scottish scientist and politician.

Studied medicine, became Professor of Chemistry at the School of Mines and later at Edinburgh. Elected to Parliament in 1868, served as deputy speaker in House of Commons. Was member of the committee which organised the Great Exhibition of 1851. Helped establish The Royal of Science and the South Kensington Museum.
