Born 1891 - Budapest, Hungary. Died 1976 - British physical chemist and social scientist.

Studied medicine and physical chemistry. Medical officer for the Austrian army during WWI. Became chair of physical chemistry at Manchester University in 1933. Became more interested in social and philosophical matters. Publications include The Contempt of Freedom (1940), Personal Knowledge (1958) and Knowing and Being (1969). Elected FRS in 1944.
