Born 1953 - English Conservative politician.

Educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge. Elected MP for Enfield Southgate in 1984, defeated in the 1997 election. He joined the Government in 1986, and remained a member until 1997 when he turned to journalism. Re-elected in 1999, became Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. Unsuccessfully contested the leadership of the party, left the House of Commons in 2005. Has made a number of television programmes and takes part in political discussion programmes.
