Served with Royalists in Civil War then joined Parliamentarians. One of the 12 commissioners to invite Charles II home. Created Baron Ashley and then Earl of Shaftesbury. Member of movement to exclude the Roman Catholic James II from the throne. Tried for treason, acquitted, moved to Amsterdam where he died.
