Conscripted into Royal Navy (1916-19). Studied medicine and English at Edinburgh. Published first volume of verse Gleanings by an Undergraduate (1932) anonymously. Earned recognition with Poems in Scots (1935) and Riddles in Scots (1937). Contracted spondylitis which confined him to bed for last 13 years of is life. Diaries of a Dying Man were published in 1954.
