Educated at Christ Church, Oxford. Began writing career by contribution music to revues. Had long partnership with Michael Flanders when he wrote the music, Flanders writing the words and dialogue, ended in 1967. Wrote a musical fable for Christmas, three books of new carols and his autobiography.
