Born 1811. Died 1882 - Scottish Anglican prelate and Archbishop of Canterbury.

Educated at Glasgow University and Balliol College, Oxford. Entered Church of England in 1836. Became Bishop of London in 1856. Appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1869, first Scotsman to hold the post. Biography published by his son-in-law in 1891.
