Born 1910 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Died 2003 - English explorer.

Educated at Oxford, achieved blue for boxing. Part of Sudan Defence Force during WWII serving in Abyssinia, Syria and North Africa. Explored Empty Quarter of southern Arabia and parts of Oman. Lived with Marsh Arabs of Iraq. Other travels included East Africa, Zagros Mountains of Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Northern India, Morocco and Yemen. Autobiography published in 1987. Knighted in 1995.

Wilfred Thesiger & his mother Kay Astley lived at my husband's grandparents' home, Milebrook House three miles up the road from here. We have photograph of the grandfather, Thesiger & Haile Selasse all together with various others at the house........... the photo is on display at Lower Buckton Country House www.lowerbuckton.co.uk
