Travelled in the Amazon Basin and Malay Archipelago. His 1885 paper promoted the theory the evolution by means of natural selection. Works included Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection (1870) and Darwinism (1899). Brought first live Birds of Paradise to be seen in Europe. Advocate of socialism, pacifism and women’s rights.
