East Neuk
East Neuk is an area of Fife in Scotland that extends from the south of St Andrews to as far north as Largo Bay . East Neuk is well known for its picturesque fishing villages such as Crail , Anstruther , Pittenweem , St Monans and Elie . The area has a rich history and Dunfermline Abbey Church hosts the graves of many Scottish kings and queens. So firm is this historical tie that you will often find the area being referred to by it’s ancient name of the Kingdom of Fife. The region is a hub for the Scottish fishing industry, a fact that is reflected by the numerous fishing villages along the coast there. One such village is Crail, which is famous for its lobster and crab. A map of the famous Crail harbour has even been hung in JFK Airport in the USA. Just six miles off the coast is the remote Isle of May, a nature reserve. The island is a popular landing place for puffins, guillemots and up to 200 other species of bird! The island was once home to a very early Christian mission, although this were destroyed by Viking raids. It was also the site of the first ever lighthouse in Scotland, built there in 1636.
