Hertfordshire Reports

Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire

Review of Rickmansworth by Kev on March 8th, 2011
Off the M25 but on the London Underground system and 4.5miles from the large town of Watford is the commuter town of Rickmansworth with a population of just 15,000. The town is on the River Colne but also has the Grand Union Canal passing through it. The banks of the canal form part of the Colne Valley Walk, connecting with the Thames at Cowley Lock, taking walkers through moors, wetlands and nature reserves. Most of this trail is suitable for wheelchair users, with flat towpaths forming much of the route. Also ideal for walks is the 100acre Aquadrome public park, with its wealth of grassland, woodland and 3 artificially created lakes that are utilised for water skiing, sailing, fishing and wildlife preservation. Golf is a popular pastime in the area, there is a public golf course and adjacent are the 2 courses of Moor Park Golf Club, which includes a magnificent mansion, currently used as the clubhouse but open to the public too. Historically, the town was mentioned in the Doomsday Book and Rickmansworth Cricket Club is one of the oldest in England, founded in 1787. The town is known locally as “Ricky” and as such, “Ricky Week” is an annual celebration of past and present.
