Review of Almondsbury by Sharon on November 8th, 2007
The village is divided into two parts by a steep hill. Nestling at the
foot of this hill is Lower Almondsbury. Overlooking the Severn
estuary the land here is shaped like a bowl. This, and not the local
love of cricket, gave the pub and hotel, The Bowl Inn, its name. This
whitewashed-stone inn was partly formed by three cottages originally
built in 1146 to accommodate the monks building the church of St Mary
the Virgin. The church's lead-covered spire was added later, but
before 1619. The Bowl Inn became a licensed premises way back in 1550.
The upper part of the village is served by The Swan Inn, which is on
the A38 opposite the open space known as Almondsbury Tump. Visitors
can also stay at the Almondsbury Interchange Hotel situated on
Gloucester Road near the motorway junction.

Review of Berkeley by Pamela Curtis on January 22nd, 2008
The Malt house as it is now known, was the Bird in hand, and was owned by my Grandparents, Mr and Mrs Cooper, most of the people of Berkeley have asked for it to be changed back to it,s original name, as the history of the Bird is of great interest. For many youngsters today they rely on us to leave the History for future generations, so if you would like more information on The Bird In Hand, and its History, please get in touch.

Review of Blockley by anne on May 6th, 2008
We enjoyed a good five nights in the peaceful town of Blockley at the crown. The tranquility of Blockley, the helpful smiling staff and the nice beer made our weekend just lovely. The bar is just downstairs with all the local color wanted, the people in Blockley are very charming and welcoming. We took part in a village fete on saturday to celebrate the new post office/shop/café. Lovely little shop with white wine in the cooler, perfect for a spur of the moment picnic on the hill. Blockley is much nicer than Broadway and Chipping camden and all the touristy places, only 20 minutes from all the gardens, like Snowshill and Hidcote and set on a serene valley. Nice woods at the end of the village for a little walk after breakfast as well. If you want a weekend of quite countryside and a place to read your books, this is the place. Our only regret is that the labs weren't there more often...

Bourton on the Water, Gloucestershire
Review of Bourton on the Water by G Nairn on October 22nd, 2010
Frequent visitor for day and short break.
Surprised and disappointed that the new disabled
toilet in the car and coach park does not conform
with the appropriate regulations and is completely
inaccessible to many disabled persons. In this day
and age this is quite incredible and one of the worst examples of these installations I have visited and used in over 40 years.

Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire
Review of Chipping Campden by harry gladwin on November 22nd, 2007
During a recent trip to the Cotswolds, I stayed briefly in Chipping Campden. Having seen much of the UK, I have never visited a more beautiful town than Chipping Campden, with its ancient market square, magnificent church and stunning countryside. Campden's history is based around the sheep wool industry and indeed there is still plenty of sheep farming going on in the area. I was very fortunate to stumble upon a local sheep farmer who has lived and worked in the area all his life and who runs a small business called Chipping Campden Cars (www.chippingcampdencars.com) through which he gives guided tours over the North Cotswolds and beyond to Stratford upon Avon, Oxford etc. The tour was so exceptionally interesting and we saw so many hidden "off the beaten track" gems, that it compelled me to write and urge anyone else staying in this area to go on one of these tours, as you will not be disappointed.

Review of Corse Lawn by Caroline Currie on July 12th, 2009
This is the WORST establishment I have ever had the misfortune to stay in!
My partner and I have just returned early from a weekend break at this hotel, which promotes its self as a luxurious, warn and friendly country house hotel.
We arrived on Friday evening and were greeted with a less than friendly welcome by the man on reception. He showed us to our room and promptly left, there was no mention of where breakfast was served, timings etc., no smile or welcome to the hotel. We are reasonable people, so as we had arrived at around 8pm, we thought maybe the man on reception had been working a long shift, so we made allowances.
The following day, which was my birthday and the reason for our stay we booked dinner in the hotel's restaurant.
When we arrived at the arranged time there was nobody around to greet us, show us to our table, or indeed tell us where we should go. After about 10 mins we were shown to a table and we ordered our drinks and made our selections from the menu. 40 minutes later we were still waiting for our starter to arrive, what made it worse after we had been seated and placed our order five other groups had entered the restaurant after us all been served, finished their starters and were eagerly awaiting their main course. My partner and I felt like we were completely invisible.
We eventually managed to attract the attention of a passing waiter and explained our situation politely. What we were met with I have never experienced in all of my years of travelling and staying in many hotels all over the world. The waiter told us in a very rude manner that we should have pre-ordered our food, so it was our fault! We explained that if when we reserved our table we had been told this we would have pre-ordered our menu choices. The waiter just shrugged his shoulders and looked insolently at us. By this point we were no longer hungry and cancelled our food and left. There was no apology, no warmth and friendliness that this establishment promises on their literature....interesting eh?...
Interestingly...most of these groups in the restaurant were non-hotel residents and in groups of four or more. It seems to us that this establishment is not interested in residents and certainly not just two people who are not big drinkers, obviously the cover charge for the hotel is much lower with the likes of us!
Finally to finish our woeful story, we went to reception to complain to the manager and were given the same rude treatment. The lady manager called us liars and said that the waiter would not speak to us like that. She also said "everybody who uses our restaurant knows you need to pre-order" again we explained that we were residents (she was completely unaware and uninterested) and did not know this. After much rudeness on her part we decided to check out of the hotel early. For us our weekend completely ruined, my birthday celebrations ruined. If I am honest it was like a scene from "Fawlty Towers", or "You Have Been Framed"...I am still in total disbelief.
I would urge anyone to think twice before choosing this hotel!

Frampton on Severn, Gloucestershire
Review of Frampton on Severn by Glen Miller on February 5th, 2007
Excellent small village pub, warm atmosphere, friendly locals.
Traditional pub food - cottage pie and chips, pastie and chips, ploughmans and variety of sandwiches. Good selection of beers - my personal choice - Adnams.

May Hill, Gloucestershire
Review of May Hill by Craig James on June 25th, 2009
I go to the Glasshouse on a regular basis, i find the food excellent and have never had a bad meal there. The coldest and perfect pint of stowfords you will get!! as for the landlord i find him welcoming and very entertaining. As for people commenting on being asked to leave the table when they have finished, it is a very busy pub and people will wait for tables at the end of the day it is a business!!!
Review of May Hill by John Hatton on May 23rd, 2009
I vsisted this pub last night 22nd May. food was nice but the landlord was not. Hurried us with our meal saying he wanted the table. When we had finished eating he wouldn't let us order more drinks as he said ne needed the table.
Needless to say we wont be going back. He made Basil Fawlty look good.

Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire
Review of Moreton-in-Marsh by jean hemming-bastin on May 12th, 2009
a beautiful place but what a nightmare trying to find a parking place, why not have a park and ride as Salisbury do?. love the area, really beautiful. market lets itself down by the traders admitting that as they have a monopoly by being the only market in the area they can "charge what they like" and people will pay it. not a good comment for what is a lovely place, i will certainly visit again but will be very cautious at which market stalls i shop.

Review of Northleach by Janet Sandilands (Mrs) on June 30th, 2009
I used to live in the house right next door to the Wheatsheaf Hotel up until 1965. I live in Perth Scotland now but I still love going back to Northleach and the surrounding areas. I love the Cotswold stone of the houses. The people who come from Gloucestershire and the rolling hills. My friend from Perth has just come back from visiting Northleach and Bibury never having seen these towns before and she loved this area. I couldn't get her to stop talking about it , I felt quite homesick.

Nympsfield, Gloucestershire
Review of Nympsfield by John J Rogers on December 13th, 2009
I grew up in Nympsfield and to me it is the most georgous memories of my life. I lived in the beautiful homestead run by the nuns. I would dearly love a photograph or pictures of the old home. At 58 its been 45 years since I left there and long to go back for a holiday. Anyone would enjoy this unchanged haven of England. If you can help with pictures I would be ever so grateful.

Review of Old Sodbury by Larry on June 24th, 2009
The town is charming. The Dog Inn is an amazzzing [proper] English pub of some 500+ years of age. The menue is vast and the food is always fresh and delicious. Not your typical "pub" food.
And the people are very nice. I've been several times.

Review of Painswick by Robert Shea on June 3rd, 2008
We tried The Royal Oak after being away for 5 years in France. The Oak was our "local" but with new owners and a change of staff, some local gossip downed the pub. Yesterday we decided to see for ourselves with another couple. We were all very pleasantly surprised -welcoming reception - attentive service - wholesome good food, well prepared by the son of Sheila, the pub owner. We started in the courtyard but finished indoors out of the rain. Try the homemade bread and butter pudding.

Paxford, Gloucestershire
Review of Paxford by Eric Taplin on February 9th, 2006
I was born at Paxford on Christmas day 1938,and lived there untill called up for national service in 1958.My Grandfather was licencee at the now, well managed Churchill Arms in 1936. It was just an off-licence in those days, well supported by travellers who stayed the summer months working on the land fruit picking etc.
Paxford is well worth a visit and a meal at the Churchill Arms before travelling on a couple of miles to the delightful Chipping Campden.

Review of Stroud by Ted Cheers on September 26th, 2008
An item on our local radio station this morning said that Stroud had a high overspend on bus fares for over 60s using the national bus pass.
Last week, a group of walkers staying in Stroud caught a bus to a village some 6 miles from the town, those under 60 paying full fare were issued with a ticket to the village while the rest of the party on National pssses were issed with free tickets to the bus's destination some 5 miles further on.
Could it be that the bus company is invoicing the council for a refund on the alleged longer journey?
Regards, Ted Cheers.

Come to Stroud for the fantastic festivals and vibrant art scene. The welcoming cafes and restaurants. The place where poets and artists to sit over a coffee watching, talking, dreaming.
Use Stroud as a base to go forth and discover the stunning surrounding countryside.
Come and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere
