I live in the village so was aware the Holcombe Inn was under new management so was eager to try it out as its reputation previously wasn't great. We booked a table for 6 and were seated straight away but after about an hours wait we had to request that someone take order. I ordered a med/well done rump steak and it came very rare! It was impossible to grab the attention of the waitresses and as no-one came to check all was well I was forced to swap my meal with someone else! I'd been looking forward to the meal all day so was very disappointed and the steak only came with a few chips and half a tomato & mushroom. No salad or vegetables were included so we we ordered a side salad which didn't turn up! The other people I dined with were fairly happy with their meals, though one in particular was very small and looked more like a starter and another thought she had packed mash instead of freshly made! The dishes all looked wonderful so clearly more effort was going into their appearance rather than the taste (Probably to justify the expensive prices). When the waitress cleared the plates we complained and she said she'd get someone to come and talk to us. No-one did! I've worked as a hostess and waitress in many restaurants and to be honest we've had much better service in a cheap chain restaurant or Sainsburys cafe! The deserts were OK but we were not offered any coffees. Our bill came to over £200 and upon paying I told the hostess about our complaints. She simply said 'sorry' (in an unconvincing tone) and said there was nothing she could do about it! Needless to say I will not be going there again!!!!!!

I thought the hotel was great, and the 2 young lads that were running it were brilliant. Really nice food, good atmosphere and the room was great. Got a great bargain from an internet deal I found so was really happy with the price as well. Only problem was finding the place, so I would suggest a sat nav!

Loveley beers on tap, great range of Thatcher's varietal ciders in bottles, classy house wine and a friendly welcome. Have also stayed here many times in the wonderful rooms and enjoyed the freshly cooked breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice. The view across the valley to the Downside Abbey school on a summer's evening is unforgettable. A beautiful, truly rural, location. Richard and Sarah are wonderful hosts and John behind the bar is equally kind, helpful and efficent. What more can I say ? Oh, the coffee is good too and the local fillet steak is absolutely wonderful. In fact all the food has truly local provenance and is skilfully cooked. Go there quick !
