I used to wait up on a hill and run out to take balls and then take them to the golf house to sell, sometimes we would stamp them into the ground so when the golfer had stopped looking we would retrieve them, with the money we could buy 10 woodbines cigaretes for one shilling and fourpence, we then could sit on top of the bank by the railway steps and smoke them. I went to thurnham school, and still remember the teacher taking us as a group around the golf course to inspect the damage after an air raid. I still remember my dad taking me to school on his tradsmens bike, as he used to have the butchers shop on the green. C W Simmons family butchers.one of my friends Dick Filmer would take his mums coupons that they had to have after the war, we would buy a loaf of bread for 6pence and go back up to the golf course to eat it, I have never had bread that good since, it was still hot. we never knew the importance of those coupons at that time.

I lived in Ware Street and form the age of 5 used to walk across the greens and following the footpath, with detours to climb trees. look for golf balls, and generally mess around.
The footpath led to the Enfant school.
I sued to earn pocket money skipping Chapel on sundays to look for golf balls.Mr White ''at the Club House'' once gave ne twelve shilling sfor one or two golf balls. He knew we were poor kids.
We used to hide over the top of the hill out of site and run out and steal the odd golf ball; not to do it too much or suspicion would be aroused.
I also remeber on one occassion a big croud were looking for a ball at hole 18 opposite the Club House.I saw it and ground it in the thick grass and soil, only to collect at a time when there was no one about ! About 1967 that was.
If there is any member who remembers losing their ball such circumstances on a beautiful summer eveing in 1954 or thereabouts they will now know what happened
It has always been a very beautiful course with a back drop of the North Downs, so please continue to value and apprecite how lovely it all is.
