Just a quick point here.....i somewhat agree with Howard previously....ive visited this pub over the course of 5 or so years now and i must say its changed beyond belief as it cant be classed as a 'quaint country pub' like it used to be. The new owners have introduced theme nights and fancy dress etc. We as customers look for good food, good drink and fun yes i agree but not to the extent of people dressed up as cartoon characters acting drunk while your trying to have a quiet pint and a chat. Oh and by the way please inform your customers when a theme nights on...the last one wasnt as i walked in...and promptly walked back out. Nigel R

The date shown was my most recent visit of many. I am a member of a walking club that arranges walks for fellow members. We have done two walks from the Fox& Hounds an have found "mine hosts" Paul and Clare most accommodating to the extent that they opened the kitchen on a Monday solely to accommodate my members. We also have two permanent trails starting from here that can be done any time. On reading the reviews, I don't know what Fox and Hounds some of the reviewers visited, but it can't have been the one in Clavering

Very friendly atmosphere, amazing food and excellent staff and well kept beer. As a local I often see people in the pub and often hear their compliments too! as for people complaining about not telling everybody about a fancy dress evening, any event is usually advertised on the blackboard outside underneath the sign you see as you drive past. I would recommend to anybody who enjoys a good pint, a good laugh and excellent food!

Re Howards review. The date he visited, I was at the pub for my birthday , which Paul & Clair had organised for me. There was no fancy dress , A very good day was had by everyone. Lots of customers including myself enjoyed GOOD FOOD and a Fine ALe. So if you are going to write a review make sure you visit the pub first!

i dont understand how some people complain about this pub? fancy dress being made to put people off? have a sense of humour its a pub not a 5 star restaurant whats wrong with having some fun? the staff are always friendly and welcoming never had a problem with any of them the food is excellent and the general atmosphere is a delight would recommend for families as has a large car park with plenty of room for people carriers and easy access to the pub itself.

I stopped by for a quick pint after work, had heard good words about the pub and decided to have a look myself, i am glad to say nothing went against what i had previously heard about the pub.

Time 3.10pm,really shocked to find customers in fancy dress acting like children in a so called country pub.My wife and i had popped in for some homemade food and were made to feel very uncomfortable as we were not part of the 'crowd'. Note to the owners-if you want to have a fancy dress party please notify honest other customers like ourselves by placing a sign outside prior to the event. Hence we made a quick exit and we wont recommend or return.

Lager was flat,i took the first pint back to complain and was taken aback to how rude the barman was. We were intending on eating a sunday roast but left after the lack of politeness shown to myself. Would not recommend and will not be returning!!

i thought this was a lovely warm friendly traditional english pub! im from australia and this was just what i was looking for. They were happy to cater to a large group on short notice. The staff were efficiant, cheerful and happy to wait while we all took our time being indecisive over the great menu. i liked that there was a variety of patrons in the pub, young and old, all whom seemed to be enjoying themselves, adding to the atmposphere. As for the cheesecake, there was nothing wrong with mine, infact it was so good i begged for the recipe to make it myself back home (i havent tasted a cheesecake as good as that in years!). i also liked how the artwork on the walls was available to buy, supporting aspiring local artists. i have recommended the Fox and Hound to people from all over the world, suggesting they visit if they should ever be in the area. More importantly i would recommend it to people who live in the UK because i belive it to be an english country pub that will have no problem impressing them, no matter how many other pubs they have seen. as you can tell, i really liked this place. cheers to the owners!

What a treat! My husband and two children went here for dinner and found it faultless. The food was not only excellent, but the manageress accommodated my fussy family and ajusted her menu slightly to suit us. We had an enjoyable evening in a clean and pleasant atmosphere. I would thoroughly recommend this pub to anyone.

Don't recognise a couple of these reviews as being the same Fox I know and love... I am a local and a regular diner here. It is proper pub - meaning it caters to both drinkers and diners, serves proper beer, including good guest beers (Paul sees to that) and offers a warm welcome to everyone, be they local or visiting. The atmosphere is authentic, the service is excellent, the staff are accommodating and they are particularly kind to families with children - even laying on a playground in the garden and free lollipops behind the bar. Best of all is the food, which is pretty much all home-cooked (down to the chutney). I know because I've visited the kitchens on a fair few occasions and sampled dishes Claire is testing before releasing them to her grateful public. You will find traditional pub grub (homemade pie, home cooked fish and chips), but also imaginative vegetarian options and more unusual specials such as fresh grilled sardines. Don't miss the puddings - the Eton Mess is a classic.

I am very surprised by the last two reviews. As a "local", I eat here frequently with my husband and two very young children. We have always been made very welcome and find all staff very accommodating and friendly. The current Landlords (Paul and Claire) have made huge improvements to the pub since taking over earlier this summer. They have introduced a brilliant new menu (all locally sourced and freshly cooked on the premises), made a small play area for the children and fenced the garden so they can play safely. I'm particularly surprised by the "no chips" comment because they serve chips for children in a cardboard carton so they can eat them safely outside whilst playing if so desired. I've had the home made Baileys cheese cake and would glady have licked the plate clean if I could!! The food is always delicious and is great if you want traditional pub grub. If you want expensive fine dining, by all means visit the Cricketers up the road. The Fox delivers exactly what a traditional village pub should - a friendly pint and tasty, satisfying food. Over the last several years, the pub has seen several disastrous landlords who have run the pub to the ground. It is a triumph and relief at last to have landlords who care about the village, its locals and making the Fox a pleasant place to be.

Went to this pub under duress two years ago because I couldn't get into the Cricketer's and it was terrible. It was with heavy heart that I found myself in the same situation the other day. What a turnaround. Fairly priced food that is unpretentious, yet really good. This is a pub, not a 4 star restaurant, and it serves pub food how it should be, or maybe a little better. Recommended

In a word: disappointing. We ordered two medium steaks priced £11.50 each, both arrived well done. We again requested medium steaks, one of which arrived overdone yet again, and by this time the rest of our table had almost finished their course. And then the cheesecake. It was priced £5 and everyone who sampled it agreed the cheese ingredient had curdled and must have been out of date. The landlord adopted a defensive stance, took the plate away, and didn't offer us anything else. Terrible service and quite rude! He actually seemed more interested in chatting to his locals at the bar, which resulted in us constantly getting up to request drinks and sauces etc. Final bill £60 – this did not reflect the lacklustre service and poor quality food we received.

Was terribly disappointed with the food.My wife found a hair in her mash and it seems that children are unwelcome here. After ordering some chips for my 2 sons aged 4 and 6 i was told by a rude woman,i think her name was Claire, that they didnt serve small kids!Absolutely ridiculous!! Stay away at all costs and try maybe the Cricketers just along the road.

Went for Sunday lunch, which was a carvery. It was excellent value at £8.95 and was absolutely delicious. The selection was brlliant, with a choice of Beef, Lamb, Pork or Turkey, and fresh roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, sausages wrapped in bacon, stuffing, fresh vegetables and a choice of gravy too.(Including vegetarian). The chef is also willing to do a nut roast for vegetarians if required. The staff are very friendly, and the pub has a very homely, buzzy atmosphere If you are looking for a great Sunday lunch, then try the Fox & Hounds, Clavering. We were so impressed we went back yesterday lunchtime and had a superbly cooked meal again. This place is great!!! Give it a try.....

This pub is fantastic! The welcome was second to none, with the staff being very friendly and helpful. The food is delicious, served up fresh cooked and hot. Lots of dishes to choose from, and all very good. I would highly recommend this pub to anyone. When we went we noticed they did a Carvery Roast on Sundays, so decided to try that too...it was absolutely brilliant with a choice of 4 different roasted meats, and accompanied by all the usual trimmings. Hot, fresh and just like Mum used to cook!!! Don't miss this pub out for good value, huge portions and a warm welcome.
