My partner and I visited Umberto’s on a day trip down to Dunbar, East Lothian and we were extremely pleased with the food and relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant. Coming from Edinburgh and having frequented a lot of Italian restaurants I would put this amongst the best. I would recommend Umberto’s for value and the high quality of food and cleanliness.

The bright lights were an initial turn off, but unfortunately, as we had booked a table, we went in anyway. Our order was taken quickly but the starters took over 1/2 an hour to appear. My partner ordered an antipasta salad - prawn cocktail, with salami and proscuitto- a very strange combination and it was served 10 minutes before my mushrooms. The mushrooms were cooked in garlic and herbs and there was a huge bowl full of greasy mushrooms - practically inedible. The plates were finally cleared, waiting gave us a chance to soak up the atmosphere! As I sais the lights were bright well, the table cloths were sticky and the walls were covered in what looked like a painted over dirty protest! The main courses were spaghetti carbonara and some glorified name for pasta with a meat and tomato sauce covered in melted mozzarella. Neither of these dishes had any flavour whatsoever. I was not expecting gourmet but it was utterly disgusting. Once we finished our main course we were asked if we would like anything else, we decided not to, so the staff then sat down to eat their own meal. We then had to go up and stand and wait to pay. No wonder they were one of the few places we could book a table in over the Easter weekend.
