My partner recently rang up for an appointment and was surprised when spoken to by a rude and altogether unhelpful receptionist. My partner was trying to arrange an appointment for a rather serious and painful medical condition but was told "there aren't any appointments so you'll have to wait goodbye" not letting her put the phone down with such haste my partner then had to explain firmly the seriousness of her condition to the receptionist (baring in mind she had already said it was an EMERGENCY) in graphic detail. She was then told she may have an appointment that afternoon.
It is quite possible that the receptionist in question was having a bad day or had other things troubling her. However, may I suggest that if she cannot carry out her job with a high level of care, compassion and consideration for patients, regardless of her own state of mind, then perhaps she should be a receptionist for a builders merchants and not in the NHS. After all, it is the ability to put aside your own feelings and care for others that is the essence of working in health care.
