Good Points: Excellent staff at the reception with very good relationship.
Bad Points: I would have prefered the hotel cleaner.
General review: The hotel is a fair deal.

I booked the cheapest hotel I could find in the Kings Cross area so my expectations were not high. I had heard stories about mould, dinginess, etc. so I was pleasantly surprised to find a clean hotel and more than competent staff.
My husband and I had intended on spending 4 nights here, but came back for a 5th night after travelling outside of the city for a wedding. We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again, and would even be comfortable bringing our children (aged 6 and 3) to stay with us if we are able to go to London again.
Both rooms we stayed in were very clean (and recently refurbished). The shared washrooms were also clean and well maintained. We were provided with fresh linens daily, and saw the housekeeping staff frequently.
The rooms were missing a few amenities such as alarm clocks and TVs, but this was explained by a recent ownership change. The staff were diligent about providing a wake-up knock at our door, so lack of alarm clock wasn't a problem. Having no TV was really a blessing because we ended up roaming the city in the evenings and seeing much more than we would have otherwise.
We learned that the owner has been in the industry for several years and found him to be a real professional. He was very attentive, friendly and helpful.
The location couldn't be beat for proximity to the Tube, trains and bus. The front door is 30 paces from the underpass to Kings Cross/St. Pancras stations (see the picture of the view from our window - you can see the Euston Street south exit is directly across the side street). This station is one of the best connected for travel within in the city, in Zone 1. There is a direct tube to Heathrow, and it is quite easy to travel out of the city from these train stations (within the UK as well as international).
We were able to find inexpensive food at a few places in the area. An Asian restaurant a block to the east and a restaurant with great shawarma and gyros a couple doors down. Two blocks (or so) east was an internet cafe that had great rates for internet and long distance phone calls - Much cheaper than the payphones at the train station! We made a phone call to Canada to check in on our kids that cost $40 (20 pounds) that we could have made for just $2 (1 pound) had we known about the cafe earlier. Ouch!
Don't get me wrong... this is definitely a budget hotel (our room was about 10' x 12' and our bathrooms were shared) but I think it is at the top of the budget heap. All in all, Northumberland Hotel exceeded our expectations for a budget hotel.
