Good Points: Staff were excellent - very friendly and helpful. The hotel was very clean including the room we stayed in. The location of the hotel was excellent, very close to shops and bars, and eating places.
Bad Points: The hotel is in desperate need of re-decoration as the decor looks old and worn. Some wallpaper peeling off the walls in the bedroom. The bed was awful, all you could feel on lying down were the springs. We expalined to the night staff about the bed, and asked for some blankets or a quilt that we could use to lie on, which was brought to our room very quickly.

First impression of The County Hotel in Carlisle was positive - the receptionist was pleasant and friendly. However, the room 'a superior double' was past its best with a wall showing evidence of damp and a television that didn't work properly.
Looking for a drink before venturing out into the city centre we discovered that the hotel's only bar was off limits as it had been reserved for a private function.
We later discovered that our 'superior double' was not the place to get a good night's sleep. Carlisle suffers from a rash of boy racers that choose not to fit their cars with silencers whilst others have invested in sound systems that would have been a credit to Live8. All these vehicles were invariably stopped by the traffic lights outside our 'superior double' making sleep impossible. Add to this the fact that every drunk in Carlisle passed by screaming and shouting was enough to drive anyone to drink - pity the bar was off limits.
