7th of January - Rock Day

7th of January is the 7th day of the year

Rock Day:
In times past the Christmas period was considered as finishing with Epiphany, January 6th, so the following day in theory meant a return to work, although the male return to labouring traditionally happened on Plough Monday, the first Monday after Twelfth Night. Rock Day is so-named because on the 7th women would begin to spin again, the rock and the distaff (an alternative jokey name for the day is St Distaff’s Day) both devices using in that art, of rather less sophistication than the spinning-wheel. The idea of fun ending on the 6th seems not to have appealed to some men, it being (as the poet Herrick recorded) thought amusing to try to burn the materials used in the task were they deployed on the 7th.
