10th of December - World Human Rights Day
10th of December is the 344th day of the year
World Human Rights Day:
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted on December 10th 1948 at the United Nations is one of the great foundations of civilised behaviour by states and individuals, a reaction in part to the vile atrocities of the Nazi and Japanese regimes – and the Soviet Union – immediately before and during WWII. Freedom, equality, family life, recourse to law, freedom from arbitrary arrest and other rights are enshrined in the document. Since 1950 the citizens of the world have been asked to note the significance of the day by observing in some way World Human Rights Day. It is a sad indictment of the mentality of those running our nations that even bastions of freedom like the USA and the UK are when it suits them willing to ignore certain rights – water-boarding in Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere one notable violation for example of the right not to be subjected to torture (article 5).
