Developed from a gravel extraction site, Low Barns is now regarded as the Durham Wildlife Trust’s flagship reserve; this 50-hectare wetland site also contains mixed woodlands and grasslands. The site includes a nature trail, picnic area, butterfly garden, bird hides, pond-dipping platforms and a bird-feeding station in winter. A roofed observation tower provides views of the Reserve and along the valley. The River Wear flows through the site and a diversity of habitats and wide range of plants and animals are found here. The bird life is particularly abundant and include the kingfisher, redstart, pied flycatcher, tufted duck and grey herons. Patient visitors may get a glimpse of red fox, roe deer, water vole and possibly even otters! Many species of butterfly, including a number of rare varieties can be found here along with a great number of interesting insects and amphibians.
