The Sheffield Wednesday Cricket Club was founded in 1820. In 1867 it became one of the first of many cricket clubs to spawn what was to become a successful professional football team, ultimately eclipsing the cricket club itself. The club turned professional in 1887, having parted ways with the cricket club in 1882. They joined the newly formed Football Alliance, a rival to the newly formed Football League, in 1889 and became its first champions. In 1890 they reached the FA cup final, losing 6-1 to Blackburn. In 1892 the two leagues merged formally, with most of the Alliance clubs forming the new Second Division. Wednesday were one of the strongest Alliance clubs and were elected straight into the First Division. Wednesday won the first of three FA Cups in 1896, repeating the feat in 1907 and 1935. They were champions of the Football League on four occasions prior to World War Two; 1903, 1904, 1929 and 1930. The team did not win any further major trophies until the League Cup in 1991. They have had several final appearances including reaching both the FA and League Cup finals in 1993. They lost both games to Arsenal 2-1 each time! Sheffield Wednesday has rarely been out of the top two tiers in their long history and has never been in the bottom division.

If I had been around when Rubens was painting, I would have been revered as a fabulous model. Kate Moss? Well, she would have been the paintbrush. - Dawn French
