Isle of Sark Tips

The Isle of Sark consists of two parts, Greater Sark and Little Sark. They are connected by La Coupée, a narrow isthmus which has a 300 foot drop either side and is only nine feet wide! The small island of Brecqhou also comes under the jurisdiction of Sark, but it is privately owned and not open to visitors. Its owners contest Sark's control over their island. A windmill dating from 1571 can be found at Sark's highest point, which is 374 feet above sea level. The sails of the windmill were unfortunately removed by the Germans during their occupation of the Island in World War II. The Seigneur of Sark (or the Dame in the case of a female) is the feudal head of Sark. The land is leased from the Seigneur to descendants of the 40 families that colonised Sark. It is possibly the last fully feudal state in the world. Part of the islands charm is that there are no cars, adding to the overall tranquillity of Sark. You can reach Sark by ferry from either Jersey or Guernsey, although the times of the Jersey ferries are affected by the tides, so you are advised to check before travelling
