Abington Tips

Abington is a name that will be familiar to the many motorists who roar up and down the M74. Situated in South Lanarkshire – about 45 minutes drive from Glasgow – Abington is most famous for its motorway serv-ices. This in some respects is an injustice, but it is rather apt, as Abington has been a thoroughfare for those travelling between Scotland and England ever since the Roman Empire took a shine to the Great British way of life. Sitting snug among the rolling green pasture land of the Clyde Valley, Abington seems to steal itself away from the M74’s relentless hum, content in its own sleepy corner of the country. The village itself is small, with country-style cottages lining its roads. The attractive red sandstone and grey-bricked Glencaple Parish Church dates back to the late 19th Century, and has seen the village grow up around it, fed by both rail and road links. Abington’s railway station on the West Coast line has long since closed, but its proximity to the M74 will always ensure that the Abington Hotel will enjoy a steady footfall. Biggar is the closest town to Ab-ington, found just along the A702, and both settlements have had a long association with the River Clyde, as it travels from its source in the Southern Uplands.
