The historic town of Downpatrick is of huge religious importance. It's dominated by a magnificent Gothic cathedral built on a hill, where places of worship have existed since 1016. The cathedral marks the grave of St Patrick - who brought Christianity to Ireland - with a slab of Mournes granite. It's thought that St Columcille and St Brigid are also buried here. The town's links with St Patrick are celebrated and explained at exhibitions in the Down County Museum, located in a former jail and military barracks, and at the Saint Patrick Centre, where the story is told in his own words. Saul Church is a replica of St Patrick's first church, and his statue can be seen nearby atop Slieve Patrick. Other ancient attractions include the Downpatrick & County Down Railway where visitors can take a trip on an old steam train and explore the museum, and a number of ancient monuments just outside the town. Ballynoe Stone Circle dates back to prehistoric times, while Inch Abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery, founded in the 1180s. Struell Wells - a complex of healing wells - survive from 1306. Downpatrick's more contemporary attractions include golf, horse-racing and a Civic Arts Centre.
