Thought to have been in existence since Anglo Saxon times, this unique market town in the north of Nottinghamshire is aptly dubbed the ‘gateway to the Dukeries’ – referring to the number of ducal residences which lie close by. The grounds at Clumber, Welbeck, Thoresby and Rufford lie on what were once large areas of forest, claimed by the noble families who built their parks and homes and created the famous grounds that attract thousands of visitors a year. Beautiful gardens, stately buildings and tranquil woodland, set within some of the country’s most beautiful forests – the Dukeries have much to recommend them.
The ducal influence is even reflected in the town centre. At Bridge Street and Bridge Place – the heart of Worksop’s thriving retail community – coloured stone is set into the paving on the pedestrianised streets, depicting the local heraldic crests. There is also a paved maze featuring a heraldic lion and unicorn, giving the town a sense of real historical character.
Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Worksop really comes alive with the buzz of the open-air market. Traders and visitors flock to the town centre on the look-out for a bargain, part of a centuries-old market tradition.
As well as shopping opportunities, Worksop offers space for quiet contemplation and reflection. The Augustian Priory of St Cuthbert and St Mary was founded in 1103 by local landowner William de Lovetot. The surviving part of the Priory, which consists of the nave, western front and twin towers, was built in the latter half of the 12th century, as was the distinctive iron-bound door in the south porch.
Worksop offers centuries of history and culture in some of Britain’s most beautiful countryside.
