Lively, exciting and scenic, the South Bank rolls out one fine attraction after another beside the Thames, and it's regarded as one of Britain's most important cultural centres. Many define the South Bank as the riverside stretch between Blackfriars Bridge and Westminster Bridge. This is a lovely place to stroll along taking in the sights - the water, the boats, the famous buildings and the more distant views of St Paul's, towering beyond Blackfriars, and the Houses of Parliament, a magnificent landmark across the river at Westminster. There are plenty of places to rest along the way, in Bernie Spain Gardens, perhaps, or a café or bar in Gabriel's Wharf among the designer craft shops and boutiques. Popular destinations include the Oxo Tower's restaurant and gallery, the National Theatre, the BFI, the London Eye, and the imposing County Hall, which houses the London Aquarium, Dali Universe and the Namco amusements. The Southbank Centre's concrete complex includes the Royal Festival Hall (surviving from 1951's Festival Of Britain), Queen Elizabeth Hall and Hayward Gallery. By other definitions, the South Bank extends to cover an entire arts quarter incorporating Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe, BFI IMAX, and the Old Vic and Young Vic theatres.
