Enniskillen sits spectacularly on a natural island at the centre of Ireland’s Lake District, where Upper Lough Erne meets Lower Lough Erne in County Fermanagh. The town itself is welcoming and attractive with a host of fine eateries and convivial bars, yet most visitors use it as a base to explore the real attractions of the area, the Lough and surrounding countryside. Enniskillen’s first castle was built by Hugh Maguire in the 15th century but was captured and rebuilt by William Cole. In 1611 Cole decided to build a whole new town around his new fort and his town planning is still strongly in evidence today. The other imposing building in town is St. Macartan's Cathedral. Stop off at The Buttermarket, an arts and craft centre in town that showcases some fine local crafts. A swift ascent to Cole Monument provides great views across Enniskillen and Lough Erne. Enniskillen has some of Ireland’s finest attractions close by, from the Neolithic burial grounds that dot the islands of the Lough, to the National Trust properties of Castle Coole and Florence Court. The Marble Arch Caves, Belleek pottery and Lough Navar Forest Park with its spectacular views from Magho Cliffs, considered by many to be the best view in Ireland, are all worth a day trip.
