| 10 Places to Stay

Situated only a couple of miles west of Galway city, Salthill is really one of its suburbs. But it has taken on a life of its own as a seaside resort with two great claims to fame. One is its beautiful location: this is one of the most popular spots from which to follow the romantic tradition and "see the sun go down on Galway Bay". The other renowned feature of Salthill is its promenade, said to be the longest in Ireland. Walkers and cyclists enjoy sensational views and fresh sea air on the prom, while families can explore a succession of lovely, sandy beaches. Sports based at the waterfront include fishing, swimming, diving, snorkelling and sail-boarding, while back on firm ground, Galway Golf Club welcomes visiting players to its parkland acres and spectacular coastal scenery. Salthill has plenty of indoor attractions too. This is the home of the National Aquarium of Ireland, where some 150 different species of marine and fresh- water life may be seen. The Leisureland complex, an entertainment, health and fitness centre which provides pools, amusements, shops and a state-of-the-art gymnasium, is a very popular amenity. Salthill also serves up plenty of good times in its restaurants, pubs, hotels, discos and casinos.
